The Atlantic Lottery Corporation, commonly known as Atlantic Lottery, has opened its online casino platform to residents of Prince Edward Island, allowing anyone with a local phone number or address to access its online casino games.

The Prince Edward Island Government confirmed the move in an emailed statement to Radio Canada, saying its goal is to "give islanders who choose online gaming a safer way to play."

Atlantic Lottery added that its goal is "to redirect the existing player base from these illegal sites and bring them back to Atlantic Lottery, which is legal, regulated and responsible."

Elsewhere, in one of the biggest recent developments in Canada's gambling sector, private online casino and sports betting operators launched in Alberta, ending PlayAlberta's position as the province's only regulated online gambling platform.

Alberta becomes Canada's second province to open its regulated online gambling market to commercial operators after Ontario did so in April 2022. The government-run platform will continue to operate alongside private brands.

The new framework separates regulatory and commercial functions. The Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis Commission (AGLC) is responsible for registering operators and suppliers, certifying systems and enforcing regulatory standards.

The Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) signs commercial agreements, manages operator relationships and oversees anti-money laundering, complaints and financial reporting.

Registered operators include FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, bet365, Caesars Sportsbook, theScore Bet and BetRivers, with several companies registering multiple brands under the province's site-based approval system.
