New South Wales to extends special event trading hours

The New South Wales Government has confirmed it will continue its Special Event Extended Trading programme for the remainder of 2026. The extension comes after licensed venues across the state reported strong patronage during the FIFA World Cup. 

The initiative, introduced to allow pubs, clubs and bars to open earlier for World Cup matches, drew large crowds as fans gathered to watch the Socceroos' campaign before the team was eliminated in the play-offs. Venues will also be able to operate extended trading hours for the tournament final between Spain and Argentina.

The expanded calendar now includes a range of major sporting and cultural events, such as the NRL Grand Final, Rugby League World Cup, US Tennis Open and Bathurst 1000, alongside regional festivals including the Hats Off to Country Festival in Tamworth and the Mundi Mundi Bash in Broken Hill.

While the extended trading arrangements allow licensed venues to serve alcohol for longer during designated events, the Government emphasised that gaming machine operating hours will not be extended. Venues offering gaming facilities must continue to comply with existing gaming machine trading restrictions, while responsible service of alcohol requirements also remain in force.

The distinction means hotels and clubs with gaming operations may benefit from increased patron traffic during major sporting events without any expansion of gaming hours. Industry observers have long noted that high-profile sporting tournaments can increase overall visitation to hospitality venues, creating opportunities for food, beverage and other entertainment offerings while maintaining existing gambling controls.

Gaming and Racing Minister David Harris said the World Cup had generated an outstanding response from venues across the state, adding that the broader programme supports local businesses while promoting a safe and vibrant night-time economy.

The Australian Hotels Association NSW also welcomed the initiative, saying the World Cup created a festival atmosphere in pubs across the state and encouraged communities to gather for major sporting occasions. The extended trading calendar is expected to provide similar opportunities for licensed venues throughout the rest of the year while balancing economic benefits with responsible regulatory safeguards.
