Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has removed more than 4 million pieces of online gambling content. The action forms part of a wider effort to address harmful material across digital platforms.
Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid said the ministry handled 5.15 million pieces of negative content between October 2024 and September 11, 2026. Online gambling accounted for more than 4 million of the total items removed.
The figures were disclosed during Bali Tech Week 2026, where Hafid outlined the Government's efforts to strengthen protections as Indonesia's digital economy and online services continue to expand.
The removal of gambling-related content forms part of Indonesia's wider campaign against illegal online gambling, with the Government targeting material distributed through social media and other digital channels.
Alongside content enforcement, the Ministry has introduced biometric verification for new SIM cards as another measure intended to strengthen user and telecommunications data protection.
Hafid said 31.1 million users had completed biometric verification as of the latest update. The Government plans to encourage telecommunications operators to expand the system beyond new registrations so existing mobile users can also complete biometric checks.
The Minister said digital infrastructure, industry development, improvements in digital skills and user protection need to progress together as the Government assesses developments during the first two years of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka's administration.
The figures come as Indonesia continues to confront the presence of online gambling across its digital ecosystem, with gambling-related material representing a substantial majority of the harmful content addressed by the ministry during the reported period.
Bali Tech Week 2026 runs from October 19 to 23 and is expected to attract more than 4,000 participants from over 30 countries.
