The union representing workers at Uruguay's Enjoy Punta del Este casino is seeking a tripartite meeting with the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS) and Baluma's new management over what it says is a reduction in shifts assigned to part-time and casual employees.
The Association of Baluma Employees (AFUB) is evaluating a formal request for the meeting after raising concerns that temporary and part-time staff have seen fewer work opportunities since Baluma assumed control of the property.
Union representatives are seeking clarification on staffing plans and future employment arrangements.
The discussions would involve the MTSS, AFUB and Baluma, the company that operates Enjoy Punta del Este. The union argues that the reduced allocation of shifts has affected workers who depend on casual and part-time employment.
Weeks ago, Baluma informed AFUB that it planned to create two voluntary job pools, one for part-time employees and another for approximately 600 casual workers, although the union said the initiative has not yet been implemented.
AFUB President Luis Arteaga said the proposal is intended to allow employees to work in other areas, including relocating gaming machines within the casino, to generate additional workdays and reduce the impact of reduced shift allocations.
Enjoy Punta del Este was acquired by Brazilian real estate group JHSF as part of a broader restructuring process involving former owner Enjoy.
The transaction was completed through the prepayment of international bonds, allowing JHSF to assume control of the casino through its subsidiary Baluma.
Uruguay's Central Bank approved JHSF's acquisition of Enjoy Punta del Este in July in a deal valued at $160m
