ADG to offer no-cost financial counseling for problem gamblers through GamFin

The Arizona Department of Gaming (ADG) has introduced no-cost financial counseling for those enrolled in the regulator’s voluntary self-exclusion program and currently struggling with problem gambling, made possible through a new collaboration with GamFin. 

Unveiled by the ADG’s Division of Problem Gambling, the program offers clients the ability to meet with a counselor who will assist in developing immediate financial priorities and establishing long-term recovery goals.

“Financial harm is one of the most significant problem gambling impacts felt today,” ADG Division of Problem Gambling Director Elise Mikkelsen said. 

“Broadening access to financial counseling strengthens Arizona’s continuum of care by ensuring more individuals have the tools, support and guidance they need to rebuild as they continue in recovery.”

Counselors will help problem gamblers in Arizona with budgeting, debt management, rebuilding damaged credit and developing long-term financial stability. 

Those who are currently enrolled in the voluntary self-exclusion program restrict access to casino gaming, event wagering and daily fantasy sports contests over the course of one-, five- or 10-year bans. 

GamFin Founder Alex De Marco also spoke on the collaboration, having said, “Choosing to self-exclude is a real act of commitment, but ending gambling doesn’t erase the financial harm it may have caused. Rebuilding your financial life is part of recovery — not something that can be set aside for later.

“Providing people with practical, judgment-free financial guidance is at the heart of what we do, and we’re proud to team up with the Arizona Division of Problem Gambling to expand access to that support for more Arizonans.”

At the end of June, the ADG was granted a 20% increase in problem gambling spending for fiscal year 2027 to $4m, allowing for additional investments in prevention, education, treatment and recovery services.
