Mexico's digital betting sector saw a sharp surge during the World Cup, with transaction volumes tied to the industry rising 431.75% compared to the 2022 tournament.
The data comes according to STP, a financial technology firm specializing in payments and transactional infrastructure.
The company said the growth, more than five times the transaction volume recorded during the 2022 World Cup, confirms the tournament as one of the highest-impact events for Mexico's digital betting industry.
STP identified the country's younger population as the main driver of that growth. People aged 25 to 40 account for nearly half of the digital gaming and betting market, at 49.4%, while those under 25 represent the fastest-growing segment, with an projected annual growth rate of 16.7% through 2031.
Geographically, central Mexico accounts for 41.3% of the market, though the north-central region is expanding at a particularly rapid pace, the firm said.
A World Cup-related survey cited by STP found that 40% of Mexicans said they were very or somewhat familiar with betting, and within that group, 34% reported having gambled during football matches. STP attributed the growth to wider adoption of smartphones and tablets, which accounted for 63.9% of betting-related transactions, combined with the continued expansion of digital payment infrastructure in the country.
STP concluded that the pattern observed during the tournament reaffirms the World Cup as one of the events that historically generates the most activity on sports betting platforms globally, alongside the Super Bowl, a pattern it said was replicated in Mexico as well.
