Over 250 workers at Gold Strike Casino Resort in Mississippi have voted through a card-check majority to join Teamsters Local 667, consisting of housekeepers, food & beverage staff and cocktail waitresses.
"We're expanding our footprint across the casino industry by standing with workers and delivering real improvements on the job," Teamsters Convention, Tradeshow and Casino Division Director Tommy Blitsch said.
"By organizing workers and raising standards, we're changing the industry for the better. This win adds to our momentum, and there's more to come."
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters was originally founded in 1903 and represents over 1.3 million workers in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico.
Workers of the Mississippi gaming establishment signed Teamsters authorization cards in the hopes of securing higher wages, better benefits and improved working conditions.
"We signed our cards because we saw the benefits of becoming Teamsters," Gold Strike Casino Resort worker and Teamsters Local 667 member Erica Guerrero said.
"I have never felt more empowered. Now we have the strength to fight for fair wages and improved working conditions."
Teamsters Local 667 President James Jones III also spoke on the expansion, having said, "Each day, we build power by growing our membership, and this organizing victory is another step forward.
"These new Teamsters are determined, militant and ready to help one another. I'm excited to welcome this group."
Gold Strike Casino Resort currently offers 50,000 sq ft of casino space, including over 1,200 slot machines and eight table games featuring blackjack, roulette and craps.
