Codere-operated Casino By Yak in Cancún has enhanced its responsible gambling measures following the reopening of its venue at Plaza Las Américas, citing estimates that up to 3% of the population may be vulnerable to gambling-related harm.
Jonathan Mondragón, COO of Casino By Yak, said the property has implemented monitoring mechanisms and ongoing staff training to identify early signs of problematic behavior. The venue has also established a dedicated assistance hotline and maintains agreements with mental health professionals to provide confidential support both on-site and through digital channels.
The announcement comes as Mexico’s gaming industry faces heightened scrutiny in the run-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the country will co-host. Industry association AIEJA (Association of Permit Holders and Suppliers of the Entertainment and Gaming Industry) has called for modernization of the Federal Gaming and Lottery Law of 1947, arguing that the current framework does not adequately reflect the realities of digital and multi-channel gambling operations.
Codere operates 76 gaming venues in Mexico under brands including Yak, Royal Yak, Jackpot and Casino Codere, positioning it among the country’s largest land-based operators. Its online division has also reported growth in recent years, with monthly active players increasing from 50,000 in 2023 to approximately 85,000 in its latest disclosures.
The reinforcement of responsible gambling controls in Cancún aligns with broader sector efforts to demonstrate compliance, prevention and consumer protection standards during a high-visibility period for the industry.
Mexico’s Federal Gaming and Lottery Law dates back to 1947 and does not explicitly regulate online gambling, leaving much of the sector governed through administrative permits and regulatory interpretation rather than a modern statutory framework
