The Swedish Gambling Authority (Spelinspektionen) has named Madelaine Tunudd as its new Board Chair, effective 17 March. Tunudd, who has held the position of Vice Chair since 2019, takes over from Claes Norgren, who stepped down on 16 March.
A former judge at the Uppsala Administrative Court, she has also acted as a legal advisor to the authority since its creation in 2018 under the Swedish Gambling Act.
This year, Spelinspektionen is gaining stronger enforcement powers, including higher fines, licence actions, and tools against illegal operators. Tunudd’s appointment coincides with broader executive changes.
There are some regulatory changes incoming to the Swedish gambling market, including a broad ban on gambling with credit. Under the new regulations, taking effect in May, operators and gambling agents are not allowed to process transactions involving any form of credit. Prohibition extends to credit agreements with third parties.
The new regulation expands existing rules that prevent gambling companies and agents from extending credit to players themselves. The regulations apply to all types of licensed gambling, whether conducted online or through land-based agents and encompass a wide variety of payment methods.
Meanwhile, Sweden’s Minister of Financial Markets recently stated that there are no immediate plans for gambling tax rises.
Niklas Wykman, who is responsible for the Swedish Government’s online gambling policy, broadly stated that Sweden’s economy, despite external geopolitical turbulence, is performing above average in terms of GDP forecasts for 2026.
Nevertheless, the last year the country saw stable economic growth was 2010 – a factor which, he states, has had a continuous influence on the nation’s gambling market.
Sweden’s gambling industry saw a 1.3% increase in turnover in 2025, reaching SEK 28.2bn ($3.02bn)
