Italy’s Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM), led by Roberto Alesse, has confirmed Mario Lollobrigida as Director of its Gaming Department for a further three years. Lollobrigida first took office on 2 May 2023.
He assumed the role during a period of significant industry transformation and has since played a central part in guiding reforms across both online and land-based segments.
A key focus of his tenure has been reforming Italy’s online gambling framework. This process culminated in November 2025 with the launch of a new licensing system designed to modernise the market and strengthen oversight. Throughout the overhaul, he worked closely with stakeholders to balance the interests of the state, operators and players.
With the new online framework now largely in place, attention is shifting to the long-anticipated reform of the land-based gambling sector. The ADM has drafted a regulatory proposal to restructure the sector, though its details are still under review. Lollobrigida has long advocated for a standardised national framework, arguing that fragmented local rules have reduced effectiveness.
He has also highlighted the need for greater cooperation with major digital platforms such as Meta, Google, Apple and Twitch to combat illegal gambling activity.
Tackling illegal gambling remains a central priority for ADM. The regulator carried out 27,280 inspections in 2023, rising to 28,031 in 2024, with land-based venues receiving the highest level of scrutiny.
His reappointment signals continuity at a critical time for the Italian gambling market as regulators continue to balance innovation, consumer protection and enforcement in an evolving landscape.
