Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has removed 4,198,606 pieces of negative online content between October 20, 2024 and April 15, 2026, with online gambling accounting for the largest share of enforcement actions.

According to data released by the ministry, more than 3.29 million of the removed items were linked to online gambling. Pornography was the second-largest category with about 798,000 cases, followed by fraud with more than 41,000 and intellectual property violations with 9,217.

The campaign forms part of a wider national effort to limit access to illegal and harmful material across Indonesia’s digital ecosystem.

Director General of Digital Space Oversight Alexander Sabar said: “The removal of 4.1 million content items is not merely a statistic, but concrete proof of the state's presence in safeguarding society from the destructive impact of illegal content.”

Most of the enforcement actions were directed at conventional websites, although the ministry said it also took action across social media and file-sharing platforms.

Platforms operated by Meta accounted for nearly 199,000 removals, while file-sharing services represented more than 181,000 items in the total tally.

The ministry said the latest measures reflect broader coordination with sector stakeholders and associations as authorities seek to maintain what it described as a productive and law-abiding digital environment.

The Indonesia Video Streaming Association praised the government’s action, particularly in relation to intellectual property enforcement.

AVISI Chairman Hermawan Sutanto said: “Intellectual property protection is a fundamental pillar for digital economic growth and the long-term sustainability of content creators.”

The figures add to a broader enforcement drive targeting illegal online gambling activity in Indonesia, where regulators and financial authorities have continued to tighten oversight of digital channels used to promote and process unlawful betting activity.

Earlier this year, Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority ordered banks to block more than 30,000 accounts suspected of being used for online gambling and directed lenders to strengthen transaction monitoring and cyber patrols as payment methods diversified.

That move formed part of the same wider state campaign to curb illegal digital betting activity and reduce its impact on households and the financial system.
