The Swedish Gambling Authority, Spelinspektionen, has introduced a new regulation setting out how licence holders must carry out checks against the national self-exclusion register, Spelpaus.se.
Under the regulation, licence holders are required to use their unique login details issued by the Swedish Gambling Authority and perform the checks through the designated application programming interface (API).
A check is considered complete once it has confirmed whether a person is self-excluded from gambling or not.
The regulation will come into force on 1 August 2026.
At the beginning of the week, Spelinspektionen also launched a supervisory review into how licensed gambling operators manage players who set high monthly deposit limits.
The review includes operators such as CoinToss, Kaprifol, Mr Green and Mr Vegas and assesses compliance with rules requiring operators to contact players who set deposit limits above SEK 10,000 ($1,080) per month as part of their duty of care obligations.
In parallel, responsible gambling measures are being strengthened further. The Swedish Parliament approved an expanded credit ban under the Gambling Act, which will take effect on 1 May 2026.
Meanwhile, a recent report by economist Ola Nevander, presented by the Swedish Trade Association for Online Gambling (BOS), found that the proportion of adults experiencing gambling-related harm has declined since the early 2000s despite growth in the industry.
The Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) rate decreased from 2.2% in 2008/2009 to 1.3% in 2021. The report is based on national survey data and research covering more than 20 years.
Svenska Spel has reported its financial results for the first quarter of 2026, as net gaming revenue for the operator grew 2% to nearly SEK1.9bn, driven by growth across its lottery, sports & casino and online businesses
