Rio Hotel & Casino workers currently part of the Teamsters Local 986 union have voted "overwhelmingly" to authorize a strike following two years of "stalled negotiations" with property owner and Hyatt Resorts affiliate Dreamscape Companies.
"The Rio can afford to meet the demands of our members, but management is refusing so they can put more money in their own pockets. It's wrong, and the Teamsters are not going to let them get away with it," Teamsters Local 986 President Tim Vera said.
"We know how busy things are going to get for Las Vegas in the coming weeks with Formula One races, Thanksgiving and the National Finals Rodeo. We hope management has enough sense to resolve this issue now."
The issues stem from alleged unfair labor practices, as nearly 100 workers at Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas are part of Teamsters Local 986.
The union contract Teamsters Local 986 members have been working under expired in April 2024, with multiple unfair labor practice disputes having been filed since.
"It's time for the Rio to quit playing games and get serious at the bargaining table. We are proud of the work we do, but the way this company is treating us is unacceptable," Rio Hotel & Casino Front Desk employee Jose Culin said.
"This overwhelming strike authorization vote shows just how united the Teamsters are. And rest assured: every single one of us is ready to do whatever it takes to win a fair deal."
Teamsters Local 986 maintains close to 30,000 members in regions of the western US, Hawaii and Guam, while a date for when the Rio Hotel & Casino strike will take place has not been provided at the time of writing.
