Syria has moved to block access to a number of gambling and betting websites as part of a broader effort to protect citizens from the risks associated with online wagering and strengthen digital safety measures.
As reported by the Syrian Arab News Agency, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology announced that it had taken action after receiving complaints regarding websites targeting users in Syria. The ministry said the decision was made in line with its commitment to creating a safer digital environment and preventing unlawful online activities.
According to the ministry, access to the affected websites has been suspended as a precautionary measure while a specialised committee reviews their operations and verifies the nature of their activities. The restrictions will remain in place until the committee completes its assessment.
Officials noted that gambling and betting activities contravene applicable laws and can expose individuals and families to significant financial and social harm. The ministry highlighted concerns over the potential impact of online gambling on household finances, personal wellbeing and broader social stability.
In addition to blocking the websites, the ministry said it has formally contacted social media platforms, requesting that they take steps to stop advertisements promoting gambling and betting services to users in Syria. Authorities expressed concern that digital advertising can increase exposure to such platforms and encourage participation in activities deemed unlawful.
The latest measures form part of a wider government effort to limit the spread of online gambling and betting services in the country. Authorities said they are seeking to prevent the misuse of digital platforms for illegal activities while enhancing protections for internet users.
The ministry added that safeguarding citizens from financial exploitation and reducing the social risks associated with gambling remain key priorities as Syria continues to develop its digital regulatory framework.
