The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen responsible gambling awareness across South Korea

South Korea's efforts to combat illegal online gambling have extended to the military, with the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation's Sports Lottery and Sports Toto Headquarters conducting a dedicated awareness campaign for new army recruits.

As reported by local media, the educational program was held at the New Recruit Training Center of the Army's 51st Infantry Division, bringing together approximately 240 recruits and 60 serving soldiers. The initiative was designed to help military personnel better understand the dangers of illegal gambling as online betting continues to emerge as a growing social concern.

During the session, participants learned about different forms of illegal gambling, the warning signs of gambling addiction, and the broader consequences such activities can have on individuals, families, and society. Trainers also explained the legal risks associated with participating in illegal gambling operations, using real-life cases to illustrate how seemingly minor involvement can lead to serious consequences.

Officials said preventive education is becoming increasingly important as illegal gambling platforms continue to spread online. By reaching young adults at the beginning of their military service, authorities hope to encourage responsible decision-making and foster a healthier military environment.

The campaign reflects South Korea's broader strategy of combining enforcement with education to reduce gambling-related harm. Rather than relying solely on criminal investigations, authorities have increasingly focused on prevention by delivering targeted outreach to groups considered more vulnerable to online gambling.

Earlier this year, Korea Sports Leisure, the trustee operator of Sports Toto, also expanded its responsible gambling efforts through the latest round of its "Toto Refresh" program. Conducted in partnership with the Korea Problem Gambling Agency, the initiative provides customized education based on participants' gambling risk levels, ranging from basic prevention training to structured intervention programs and recovery-focused activities for higher-risk users.
