The Hipódromo de Mendoza, in Argentina, could be relocated from its current site in Godoy Cruz after the municipality announced plans to redevelop the property, with San Carlos now offering a 100-hectare site to host the racetrack.
Mayor Diego Costarelli announced a master plan for the roughly 40-hectare property, with the project focused on urban development and a mix of housing, green areas and other uses.
The proposal would allow the land to be integrated into the surrounding urban area while moving the horseracing activity to another location in Mendoza province. The municipality has said it intends to reconvert the site rather than eliminate the turf industry, although the final location of the racetrack has not been determined.
San Carlos, located in the Uco Valley in the south-central part of Mendoza province, is now presenting an alternative. Mayor Alejandro Morillas said the department has a roughly 100-hectare property in Paso de las Carretas that could be used for the project. He cited the availability of a water well and other characteristics of the site as factors that could facilitate development.
Morillas also argued that San Carlos' location could give the racetrack a role connecting Mendoza's northern and southern regions.
Another potential destination is Junín, in eastern Mendoza. Mayor Mario Abed has confirmed the department's interest but said the scale of the investment required to build a new racetrack remains a key issue.
The relocation remains at the proposal stage, with no new site selected so far. Meanwhile, the future of the current Godoy Cruz property is tied to the municipality's urban redevelopment plans.
