A labor court has ordered the operator to pay 36 former employees their outstanding March salaries, as Argentina’s southern province of Chubut continues to face a labor dispute following the closure of the Trewelyn casino.
The payment is expected to be updated with interest after ruling in favor of an injunction brought by the union representing the workers.
Nadia Cabrera, the union's lawyer representing the 36 workers, said the court set a two-day deadline for the company to settle the payment, warning that enforcement proceedings would follow if it failed to comply.
Cabrera added that eight additional former employees are represented separately by lawyer Martín Iturburu, while the remaining workers chose not to pursue legal action. Roughly 50 families had depended on jobs at the casino before its closure.
According to Cabrera, the company dismissed its staff while a mandatory conciliation process was underway and offered a severance payment equal to 50% of what workers were owed. That amount was never deposited into employees' accounts, prompting a separate judicial claim seeking full payment of the severance.
The Trewelyn casino's closure triggered a series of disputes dating back to March, when dismissal notices were first sent to staff, followed by a failed conciliation hearing in April and continued protests by former employees through May.
Lotería del Chubut, the provincial gambling regulator, said months ago it was preparing tender documents to license a new casino in Esquel, but no further details on that process have been made public.
