The project aims to position Thessaloniki as a competitive European destination for leisure and gaming

Thessaloniki has a new addition to its nightlife and gaming landscape: the Piazza Project, an open-air complex from Regency Casino Thessaloniki that mixes slot machines, live entertainment and hospitality.

The venue officially opened with a three-day launch event, where more than 12,000 attendees enjoyed VIP dinners, music performances and first looks at the new gaming facilities.

Welcome to the piazza: Slots, stage and spectacle

Central to the project are four slot pavilions housing 216 machines. Each pavilion is branded by a different supplier, with Aristocrat Gaming, IGT and Light & Wonder, bringing together three industry giants in a single European venue for the first time ever.

Beyond the gaming pavilions, the Piazza Project has been designed as a year-round entertainment hub. A central stage will regularly host DJ sets, live music and comedy.

The open-air design means the venue doubles as a cultural gathering space, not just a gaming floor.

For Regency Entertainment CEO Yiannis Tsirikos, the project is about creating more than another casino wing: "We're creating a hub that can attract visitors from across the region and establish Greece as a leader in the European leisure and gaming market."

Regency Casino Thessaloniki has been one of Greece's landmark gaming destinations, but the Piazza Project signals a step toward making Thessaloniki more competitive on the European stage.

The project also highlights a trend in the Casino scene: operators are no longer content with simply offering casino floors. Instead, they are packaging leisure, entertainment and dining as a single experience.

In this sense, Thessaloniki's open-air piazza is as much about lifestyle as it is about slots.

IGT steps into the spotlight

Among the headline features is the newly opened IGT Pavilion.

The branded space offers more than 50 slot and poker titles, including multi-level progressive favourites such as Tiger and Dragon, Money Gong and Olympus Link.

Nick Khin, IGT CEO Gaming, described the partnership as "a unique opportunity for players to enjoy many of IGT's popular games in one place," adding that it aligns with mixing themed events, food and entertainment alongside gaming.

Why the big gamble?

Investment in such a large-scale venue inevitably raises questions.

Can Thessaloniki realistically compete with traditional European leisure destinations? Regency appears confident.

The early response, with over 12,000 attendees at the launch weekend, suggests strong interest. Whether that momentum can be sustained over the long term will depend on how well Regency balances gaming revenue with the entertainment calendar it has promised.

Beyond Thessaloniki, the group is preparing a €300m hospitality and entertainment development in the northern suburbs of Athens, scheduled to open in 2028.

The Thessaloniki piazza therefore functions as both a local attraction and a test case for Regency's broader expansion strategy.

With heavyweight suppliers like Aristocrat, IGT and Light & Wonder onboard, the venue blends international gaming brands with a distinctly Greek setting.

For now, Thessaloniki's piazza seems to be more than just a square but also a bet on the city's future as a hub for gaming and leisure.
