Texas has long been considered a Republican stronghold, but the latest US midterm elections have delivered an extraordinary plot twist. Democrats made historic gains across the Lone Star State, flipping key statewide offices and winning seats they haven't seriously contested in decades.
Governor Greg Abbott, widely regarded as one of the most influential and politically powerful governors in Texas history, was defeated by Gina Hinojosa. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, a dominant figure in the Texas Senate, also lost his re-election race to a relatively little-known state representative, Vikki Goodwin. Meanwhile, Attorney General Ken Paxton lost his bid for the US Senate to James Talarico. Republicans lost control of the Attorney General's office, one of the state's most influential legal positions.
