Rio de Janeiro's Civil Police have opened an investigation into allegations that players from Vasco da Gama's basketball team were approached as part of a scheme intended to manipulate a match outcome for the benefit of bettors.

According to a police report filed by the club's Deliberative Council president, athletes were allegedly targeted by an individual who is accused of attempting to recruit players to influence the result of a game against Botafogo.

Testimonies indicate that the team's head coach and a player stated that the accused man allegedly offered BR6,000 to secure the involvement of at least two athletes in a plan designed to ensure Vasco's defeat.

The match in question, played on October 22, ended with Botafogo winning 85-76. Authorities have stressed that there is no confirmation that any player accepted payment or intentionally influenced the outcome.

In an official statement, Vasco da Gama said it had formally reported the allegations to police and is cooperating with the investigation.

The statement added that the club is "adopting all appropriate measures to preserve the integrity of Vasco da Gama, its professionals, its basketball team and the sport itself, always guided by ethics, transparency and respect for competitions," while criticizing what it described as the irresponsible leak of sensitive information during an ongoing investigation.

"Given the seriousness of this episode, Vasco da Gama informs that it is evaluating the appropriate measures to hold those involved accountable.

We reiterate that Vasco da Gama is fully cooperating with the competent authorities, making itself available for all necessary clarifications and for the full progress of the investigations."
