Malaysia: Sabah strengthens cooperation to curb rise in online gambling

The Sabah Government is stepping up coordinated efforts to combat the growing prevalence of online gambling, a trend authorities say is increasingly harming youths and students. As reported by The Daily Express, the initiative centers on closer collaboration between the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and the Royal Malaysia Police.

Datuk James Ratib, Sabah’s Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, said the State views the rise in online gambling as a serious concern due to its broad social impact. He noted that the problem affects families and communities through financial losses, security threats and long-term social risks.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Sabah MCMC Enforcement Team, led by Irwan Mohamed, James emphasized that addressing online gambling requires joint action from Federal and State agencies. MCMC is responsible for monitoring communication networks, blocking illicit websites and coordinating with telecommunications providers to restrict access to gambling platforms.

Police, meanwhile, lead enforcement through investigations, arrests and prosecutions. James said that cooperation between MCMC and the police is essential, particularly as syndicates increasingly operate across borders and adopt sophisticated digital methods to evade detection.

Beyond enforcement, the Ministry plans to expand digital education and awareness for students, parents and teachers. Upcoming programs will focus on online gambling risks, cyber fraud prevention and safe internet practices. Preventive measures such as digital literacy training, counseling support and the promotion of positive values will also be prioritized.

The State Government urged schools, universities, community leaders and parents to take an active role in combating online gambling. James reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to maintaining a safe and ethical digital environment to protect Sabah’s younger generation.
