The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has issued a $105,000 penalty to Score Media and Gaming Inc for failing to uphold responsible gambling obligations under Ontario's Registrar's Standards for Internet Gaming.
According to the AGCO, the operator did not properly intervene or monitor a patron who wagered $2.5m and lost $230,000 within eight months, including $100,000 in the first month.
The regulator said the player exhibited multiple warning signs, such as requesting frequent bonuses, showing signs of distress and engaging in loss-chasing behaviour all of which were ignored by the operator's VIP host team.
The AGCO concluded that despite clear red flags and inconsistencies in the player's income documentation, theScore relied solely on self-reported information and failed to perform any meaningful responsible gambling due diligence.
The fine marks another example of the regulator's strict stance on player protection since the launch of Ontario's regulated igaming market in 2022.
The AGCO said its framework aims to ensure operators detect, prevent and minimize gambling-related harm through proactive monitoring and employee training.
TheScore has the right to appeal the decision to the Licence Appeal Tribunal, an independent adjudicative body under Tribunals Ontario.
"Player protections are a fundamental requirement for any gambling operator looking to conduct business in Ontario," said Dr Karin Schnarr, CEO and Registrar at the AGCO.
Earlier this year, the AGCO conducted a province-wide sweep that led to the removal of over 50 illegal gaming devices across Ontario
