In the wake of the announcement that Genius Sports would be acquiring media network organization Legend for $1.2bn, the company hosted a webcast breaking down the specifics of the deal – explaining what it means for the business.
Leading the presentation, Genius Sports CEO Mark Locke began by outlining a FY 2025 revenue figure of $669m for the company – up 31% year-over-year, with 37% media growth over the same period.
Building on this, he underlines that the previously specified financial targets of $1.2bn annual revenue by 2028 – outlined as part of the company’s investor day in November – will be achieved ahead of time. Locke states that Genius’ anticipated 2026 revenues will reach $1.1bn during 2026 and has reaffirmed a new expected 2028 revenue of $1.8bn.
Now, the data supplier’s new definitive $1.2bn agreement to acquire Legend, according to the Genius CEO, seeks to deliver more data, audience and inventory for the business. Indeed, at its core Legend is an AI-powered media platform with AI-optimized content media platform, digital property, intent signal and content production assets, which Genius hopes will provide direct audience relationships. They also provide hosted solutions for tier-one publisher partnerships such as Sports Illustrated and Yahoo Sports – as well as operator relationships.
It is also confirmed that Legend’s leadership team will now join Genius Sports. While it is expectedly outlined that the goal of the merger will be to ensure Legend expands Genius’ model to allow for further diversification its revenue streams, Locke interestingly highlights that Legend has a strength in iGaming, with the merger representing a significant expansion into the sector for Genius – particularly in North America, a region in which many have labeled the sector as stagnant in recent years.
This acquisition sees Genius look to further utilize its FanHub to help facilitate the integration of Legend’s assets, with Locke underlining that they will be unlocked as part of the FanHub platform. Genius will look to link its sports betting data and media – becoming the only company across AI media and sports betting data. Locke concludes that the new, combined business will serve over 2,000 customers worldwide.
Legend has been operational digital sports and gaming media for over two decades
