A meeting of state institutions was held at the Office of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania on 11 February to discuss the potential removal and blocking of gambling websites and domains operating illegally in the country.

The meeting was organised in accordance with the decision of the working group established by Lithuania’s Prime Minister Decree, and was attended by representatives of the Gaming Supervision Authority.

The Authority discussed “relevant supervisory issues” with fellow institution experts, such as improving Article 98 of the Law on Electronic Communications of the Republic of Lithuania, which touches on mandatory instructions to remove and eliminate illegal domains.

The 11 February discussion was also attended by representatives of the Office of the Government, the National Cyber Security Centre, the State Consumer Rights Protection Authority, the Department of Drugs, Tobacco and Alcohol Control and more.

Article 98 regulates “mandatory instructions to remove information or eliminate the possibility of accessing it, and initiatives related to changing domain blocking mechanisms.”

On 2 February, the Gaming Supervisory Authority issued a fine of €330,600 ($390,100) to online operator, Baltic Bet, for not maintaining the proper monitoring processes to ensure compliance with anti-money laundering and terrorist financing laws.

Over the course of the investigation, it was found the operator was not properly collecting and assessing information about its clients or the origins of the funds being used for gambling.
