The Greek Gaming Commission (EEEP) has notified local gambling operators in a letter regarding the upcoming EU anti-money laundering framework. The regulator aims to ensure the market is fully prepared for its implementation.

The Commission provided operators with an update on the creation and functioning of the new European Anti-Money Laundering Authority (AMLA). This authority will be crucial in developing and enforcing the new EU framework, which is set to be gradually implemented starting on 10 July 2027.

To help operators adapt to upcoming changes, the EEEP is planning a series of targeted initiatives. These will include informational meetings and presentations about the new framework, emphasising its potential impact on the gambling sector.

The Commission will also organise conferences and workshops to provide more detailed updates. Additionally, it will collaborate with specialised institutional bodies and stakeholders within the gambling and entertainment ecosystem.

The EEEP is also encouraging operators to actively engage in the ongoing public consultation process on the AMLA website.

On the matter, EEEP Chairman Antonis Bartholomaios stated: “The EEEP will stand firmly by the side of licensed operators, actively supporting their smooth and effective adaptation to the new European regulatory framework.

“We aim to ensure that the Greek gambling market responds adequately, transparently and responsibly to the heightened requirements for combating the laundering of proceeds from illegal activities.”

In February, a bill was proposed in Greece to strengthen the crackdown on illegal gambling and introduce tougher sanctions for violators, including companies, players and influencers who endorse or promote illegal websites.
