Police in Telangana have arrested 17 people after raiding an alleged illegal gambling venue in Karimnagar, in the latest enforcement action targeting unauthorised card gaming in India.
According to local reports, Karimnagar rural police carried out a late-night operation at a house in Subashnagar after receiving information that gambling activity was taking place at the property. Officers said they found individuals playing cards when they entered the premises.
Police seized ₹675,000 ($7,900) in cash during the raid, along with 16 mobile phones, two cars and two two-wheelers.
The operation was initially handled by Karimnagar rural police before being passed to Three Town police, as the house falls within that station's jurisdiction.
Local media reports said those taken into custody included members of the rice millers' association, sarpanches from Thimmapur mandal, Congress party figures, reporters and individuals from Warangal.
Authorities have not publicly outlined any formal charges beyond the reported gambling allegations.
The case adds to a wider pattern of police action against suspected unlawful gambling gatherings in India, where gambling law remains fragmented across states.
Most organised gambling activity is prohibited unless expressly permitted under local legislation, with exceptions in some jurisdictions for licensed casinos, lotteries or other state-approved formats.
Enforcement activity has remained visible in several parts of the country during 2026, particularly in cases involving card games, cash seizures and privately organised gatherings.
These raids often focus on allegations of unlicensed gaming activity rather than regulated commercial operations, reflecting the continued role of local police in policing land-based gambling where state laws impose restrictions.
The Karimnagar case also shows how enforcement can involve multiple police units within the same district, particularly when jurisdictional boundaries affect which station takes over an investigation after an initial raid.
The Karimnagar arrests follow another police action reported in March, when officers in Madhya Pradesh detained 18 people in an alleged gambling raid at a farmhouse in Indore and seized cash, cards, phones and vehicles, underlining the continued focus on suspected illegal gaming gatherings across India.
The seized items in Karimnagar included both cash and transport assets, which police often document separately when building gambling-related cases under local law
