A grenade attack on a casino in Medellín left three people injured in the early hours of Thursday and triggered a police operation that resulted in the detention of three suspects.
The incident occurred around 2:30 am at a gaming venue in the Laureles-Estadio neighborhood, one of Medellín’s main nightlife and commercial districts.
According to Colombian authorities, individuals traveling on a motorcycle and in a nearby private vehicle threw an explosive device at the casino entrance. The device detonated seconds later.
Three people were injured in the blast, including a customer, a casino employee and a police officer assigned to security duties in the area. All were transported to nearby medical centers for evaluation, with authorities reporting that none of the injuries were considered life-threatening.
Metropolitan Police officers used surveillance footage from the casino to identify and track down three individuals suspected of involvement in the attack. The detainees are currently under investigation as authorities continue gathering evidence related to the incident.
Police said investigators have not yet established a definitive motive for the attack but are pursuing two primary lines of inquiry. One focuses on possible extortion attempts by organized criminal groups operating in Medellín, while another examines whether the incident may have been connected to a patron who allegedly suffered substantial gambling losses.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.
The latest incident follows another recent casino attack in Mexico’s Sinaloa state, where armed assailants allegedly used an explosive device to set fire to Casino Tropicana in Culiacán
