The National Hockey League (NHL) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to “protect the integrity” of professional hockey and “maintain fair and transparent” prediction markets.
CFTC Chairman Michael Selig addressed the MOU, having said, “I’m proud the CFTC and NHL have officially signed an MOU, furthering the agency’s commitment to improve data sharing between professional sports leagues and the Commission.
“This agreement is another step toward safeguarding the integrity of sports and protecting market participants in prediction markets from insider trading, fraud and other abuses. I applaud NHL Commissioner Bettman for collaborating with the CFTC and taking a leading role in protecting the integrity of professional hockey in our markets.”
The NHL and CFTC both designated a specific representative who will communicate regularly to discuss issues related to integrity, share information confidentially and ensure consistent collaboration.
The professional hockey league has also introduced “layered protections” to monitor prediction markets offered by CFTC-regulated exchanges and continues to work directly with its partners to ensure integrity policies are being met.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman also spoke on the league’s new agreement with the CFTC, having said, “Integrity has always been and remains paramount to the NHL and fundamental to the trust our fans and partners place in our game.
“Our agreement with the CFTC enhances the comprehensive integrity monitoring systems already in place and strengthens our ability to identify, deter and address potential risks. This MOU reflects a shared commitment to transparency, oversight and protecting the integrity of the game.”
Polymarket and Kalshi were named official prediction market partners of the NHL during October 2025, giving both the right to use NHL branding across their platform and products.
Bill Miller, President and CEO of the American Gaming Association, issued a forceful rebuke of the arrangement, however, characterizing the partnership as "deeply troubling" and "dangerous.”
FanDuel expanded upon its partnership with Main Street Sports Group, the owner of FanDuel Sports Network, to introduce new bet tracking capabilities for select NBA and NHL games in December 2025
