The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) has announced its support for the World Surf League (WSL) Challenger Series currently taking place in Baler, Aurora, positioning the initiative as a move to boost the country's sports tourism sector and international surfing profile.
Running from 17 November through 23 November, the competition brings surfers from across the Asia-Pacific region to compete at Sabang Beach.
The Challenger Series functions as a qualifying pathway for athletes seeking entry to the WSL Championship Tour, attracting both established professionals and rising competitors.
Commenting on the move, PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Alejandro H. Tengco stated: "We proudly support the WSL Series, which showcases emerging surfing talents and shines a global spotlight on the world-class waves of the Philippines.
"This competition provides Filipino surfers with a bigger stage to showcase their skills while helping promote sustainable coastal development in surf communities.
"We look forward to a successful WSL Challenger Series and to seeing more Filipino surfers make a mark on the international surfing scene."
The announcement follows a period of public-sector activity from PAGCOR. Earlier this week, the agency confirmed the deployment of Php32.85m ($557,000) in disaster relief funding for communities affected by recent typhoons.
The organization also recently reported a 49% surge in its nine-month net income, enabling expanded allocations for infrastructure, healthcare and sports development.
The Philippines has maintained a consistent presence in the WSL calendar, with Siargao hosting league-sanctioned events for 29 consecutive years
