The City Council of Manaus has approved a bill establishing the Municipal Week for Confronting Betting and Games of Chance Addiction.
The new initiative was designed to address the rapid increase in gambling-related harm among young people and adults in the Amazonas capital.
The proposal, authored by Councillor Raiff Matos and supported by 15 lawmakers, now moves to the desk of Mayor David Almeida for sanction.
The measure responds to growing concern about online gambling addiction, which local authorities say has escalated at a pace that families and public institutions have struggled to manage.
According to the bill's justification, gambling behavior often begins as casual entertainment but can quickly develop into financial and emotional dependence.
As Matos stated, "This problem is destroying families across Brazil. In Manaus, many parents are desperate to see their children trapped in this addiction. People are losing money and failing to pay basic bills."
The Awareness Week will include educational campaigns, workshops and public discussions aimed at informing residents about the risks of uncontrolled gambling behavior.
Schools, health services and community associations are expected to play a central role by identifying early warning signs and promoting preventive measures.
Matos emphasized that facing the issue openly is essential, noting that many people still feel ashamed or afraid to discuss gambling harms publicly.
The Councillor also stressed the urgency of the initiative, arguing that the city can no longer ignore the social impact of betting platforms.
He highlighted that Manaus has chosen to confront the problem directly.
The proposal seeks to provide structured guidance, community support and a space for dialogue so families can better understand the risks and seek help when needed.
