The Northern Ireland Gambling Support Group (GSG) has launched a new confidential SMS support service aimed at helping football players and staff affected by gambling-related harm.
The player-led initiative, developed in partnership with the Irish Football Association, the Professional Footballers’ Association of Northern Ireland (PFANI) and the Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL), provides a discreet way for individuals to seek peer support and access professional help. The service will initially operate as a one-season pilot across NIFL grounds.
To mark the launch, GSG released a video featuring members sharing their experiences with gambling addiction. The group, made up of four current and former Irish League players, provides peer support to those facing similar challenges.
PFANI Chief Executive Michael Carvill stated: "The findings from our recent player survey highlighted a concerning level of gambling-related issues across the league.
"We commend the courage of the members of the Gambling Support Group; these current and former players lead the way and will enable others to seek support and guidance. We want every player to know that they are not alone and that asking for support is a sign of strength."
Irish FA Anti-Doping & Integrity Education Officer Chris Wright added: "Players can often feel isolated, embarrassed or unsure who to turn to. What makes GSG so powerful is that the support comes directly from people who have lived through the same experiences.
"Through our integrity education programme, we regularly speak to players and staff about betting rules, regulations and the risks associated with betting and gambling harm. However, we recognised that education alone isn't always enough."
QR-code posters are being placed at NIFL grounds across Northern Ireland, allowing players and staff to access confidential support by scanning the code or texting a specific number.
The service connects them with a member of the group, who can also help them access professional support when needed.
Northern Ireland has a separate gambling framework from Great Britain, governed by the 1985 Order and amended in 2022
