The NBA is reviewing three finalist groups for a potential Las Vegas expansion franchise, with a winning ownership bid expected soon, according to ESPN. Sources cited by the broadcaster put the combined price of the franchise and a new arena at at least $12bn - $13bn.
The groups are Nancy Walton Laurie and Bill Laurie; Steve Apostolopoulos and Marc Lasry; and Vegas Golden Knights majority owner Bill Foley with former Phoenix Suns owner Jerry Colangelo.
The Foley–Colangelo partnership combines an established Las Vegas sports owner with a former NBA franchise owner. ESPN reported that their proposal would involve a new arena if selected, despite Foley’s earlier suggestion that the team could play at T-Mobile Arena.
An ownership choice would not itself approve expansion. The NBA Board of Governors voted in March to explore teams in Las Vegas and Seattle and engaged PJT Partners to evaluate ownership, arena infrastructure and economic implications.
A formal approval process for two teams is expected by the end of December, with a launch targeted as early as the 2028–29 season.
Las Vegas is reportedly being addressed first because of stronger bidding and the need to resolve a new arena development. Seattle already has Climate Pledge Arena as a potential home.
For the city’s casino and hospitality sector, the venue decision is a point to watch. Caesars Entertainment and Vici Properties have separately discussed an arena plan on land behind three Strip resorts, but the reported finalist list does not establish that their site is attached to any bid.
The reported price includes a new arena and should not be treated as a standalone franchise valuation
