The NSW Independent Casino Commission (NICC) has ruled that The Star Sydney's licence suspension will remain in effect for the foreseeable future.

In 2021, The Star was investigated and found complicit in multiple high-profile money laundering failures, among other crimes.

In response to the Bell Review, the NICC suspended The Star's licence indefinitely in 2022, fined the casino AU$100m (US$66.1m) and appointed Nicholas Weeks as the new Manager.

He is responsible for overseeing a long list of improvements due at the property, as well as implementing new staff and regulatory guidelines.

Under his guidance, The Star has been able to return to operations and offer gaming services.

Weeks' term as Manager was due to end on 30 September 2025, following three years at the company.

As such, The Star and Weeks submitted reports to the NICC regarding the company and the efforts made so far.

While the NICC "determined that The Star's licence suspension should remain in effect", it did agree to extend Weeks' appointment as manager until 31 March 2026.

Steve McCann, The Star Group CEO and Managing Director, said:

{{QUOTE}}We acknowledge that there is more work to do but we remain committed to delivering on our Remediation Plan to support the safe and compliant operation of our business. The Star is committed to continuing its transparent and constructive relationship with the Manager, the NICC and the New South Wales Government, and demonstrating to all its stakeholders its suitability as a licence holder as soon as possible{{/QUOTE}

Prior to his appointment with The Star, Weeks was the Executive General Manager of Transformation and Regulatory Response at Crown Resorts - another Australian operator that suffered similar troubles
