Sale completes the phase out of state-owned land-based casinos

Svenska Spel has signed an agreement to sell the Hasseln 1 property at Kungsgatan 65 in central Stockholm to Alecta Fastigheter, marking the final step in the winding down of its land-based casino operations.

The building previously housed Casino Cosmopol Stockholm, which closed in April 2025 following the Riksdag's decision to phase out state-owned land-based casinos.

The sale forms part of the process Svenska Spel has carried out since the closure, as it shifts its focus fully towards regulated digital gaming.

Alecta Fastigheter plans to redevelop the property into a mixed-use space featuring high quality offices and event operations. According to the buyer, the redevelopment aims to ensure the premises continue to contribute to activity in Stockholm's city centre.

Svenska Spel president and CEO Anna Johnson said the transaction provided a stable long-term owner for the property while also supporting the operator's broader strategic direction.

She added that the sale represents the final stage of Svenska Spel's exit from land based casino operations and delivers an additional financial contribution to the Group.

The approximately 5,300 square metre building is more than 100 years old and has played several roles in Stockholm's cultural and entertainment history.

Before becoming Casino Cosmopol more than 20 years ago, it previously operated as the Palladium cinema, which opened in 1918 as the city's largest cinema, as well as hosting nightclub and concert activities in later decades.

Occupancy by Alecta Fastigheter is scheduled for 3 March 2026. Cushman & Wakefield and TM & Partners advised Svenska Spel on the transaction.

Earlier this month, the operator confirmed the appointment of Mårten Forste as Business Area Manager for Sport & Casino, effective February 2026.
