More than 10 Thai politicians and former members of parliament are currently under investigation for alleged links to scam operations, online gambling networks and drug trafficking, Justice Minister Pol Lt Gen Rutthaphon Naowarat confirmed. His comments, reported by the Bangkok Post, come amid heightened public scrutiny of criminal infiltration into political circles.

Speaking after chairing a meeting of assistant ministers on January 7, Pol Lt Gen Rutthaphon said law enforcement agencies have been gathering intelligence and conducting ongoing probes into the activities of several political figures. He noted that coordinated operations could soon be launched against election candidates and former MPs should sufficient evidence be established.

“Based on available databases, around ten politicians have been linked to online gambling websites and scam operations,” he said. Investigations are drawing on information from cyber police, the Royal Thai Police and the Department of Special Investigation, with the minister emphasising that the goal is to ensure clear progress and transparent reporting to the public.

The minister also sought to clarify earlier remarks that some interpreted as downplaying political involvement in criminal networks. He explained that his previous comments were made in response to a specific question about drug trafficking during a policy-focused meeting, which did not include discussions on individual cases.

Former PP list-MP Rangsiman Rome had criticised the government’s handling of scam gangs and illegal gambling groups, saying their expansion reflects weak governance and growing political influence of so-called grey businesses.

Pol Lt Gen Rutthaphon rejected that characterisation, insisting that investigations are active and comprehensive. He said authorities remain committed to dismantling criminal networks regardless of political rank.

Arrests are expected if ongoing inquiries yield actionable evidence.
