Thailand's National Anti-Corruption Commission has reassigned one of its Commissioners after police transferred a completed investigation file linked to the high-profile "gold bar" bribery allegations involving former deputy national police chief Surachate "Big Joke" Hakparn, according to reports.

Surapong Intarathawon, deputy secretary general and acting secretary general of the NACC, confirmed that police handed over the file on January 5. The submission identifies six suspects and centres on claims that gold bars were offered to influence proceedings connected to investigations of online gambling networks.

At its January 6 meeting, the NACC resolved that the Commissioner accused in the matter would be removed from responsibilities overseeing two bureaus directly involved in the case. Commissioner Phatsak Wannsang was appointed to assume those duties.

Earlier on the same day, police held a press briefing detailing evidence allegedly linking Surachate to the bribery attempt. Investigators said the case involves gold bars weighing approximately 3.7 kilograms.

Police presented video footage purportedly showing Pol. Col. Phakphum Phitsamai, identified as a close aide to Surachate, delivering the gold to the driver of a black Toyota Alphard assigned to an NACC Commissioner. Officers said the Commissioner was inside the vehicle at the time. Receipts for the gold purchase and audio recordings referring to "Joke" and the weight of the gold were also highlighted.

Police stated that Phakphum provided recordings as part of the legal process and not in exchange for favours. Surachate has consistently denied wrongdoing related to online gambling.

Suspended from duty since April 2024, Surachate awaits a Supreme Administrative Court ruling on January 9 that will determine whether his removal was lawful. The outcome will decide whether he may return as Deputy Police Chief or see his police career come to an end.

Under Thai law, the NACC has up to 30 days to decide whether to pursue a formal investigation once a case file is received
