YouTube has announced enhanced enforcement of its gambling and graphic violence policies, effective 17 November 2025.
The platform is expanding its regulatory scope to address emerging trends in online gambling, particularly transactions involving digital items with monetary value.
The updated guidelines extend existing restrictions on uncertified gambling sites to now cover wagering with digital goods - including video game skins, cosmetics and NFTs.
This marks a significant expansion beyond traditional cash-based gambling content, reflecting the growing prevalence of digital asset betting in gaming communities.
Social casino content - games where no real-world money is wagered or cashed out - will also face new age restrictions. Previously unrestricted, content depicting or promoting these platforms will now be limited to viewers aged 18 and older, even though no actual monetary transactions occur.
The policy updates also address graphic violence in gaming, particularly content featuring realistic human characters in sustained torture scenes or mass violence against non-combatants. YouTube will assess factors including scene duration, visual prominence and character realism when determining age restrictions.
Content uploaded before 17 November that violates any of these guidelines may be removed or age-restricted without penalty strikes.
YouTube has encouraged creators to utilise editing tools - including trimming and blurring features - to bring existing content into compliance before the enforcement date.
The announcement follows YouTube's March 2025 policy tightening, which prohibited creators from directing viewers to non-certified gambling sites through links, logos or verbal mentions.
These progressive restrictions align with parent company Google's broader gambling advertising reforms, which introduced stricter country-specific certification requirements in April 2025.
YouTube emphasised that most channels will experience minimal impact from the changes
