The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission has fined Lara Sporting Club AU$15,000 (US$9,975) after poker machines were found to be operating outside permitted trading hours.
Gaming activity was detected at the venue on 18 May 2025, when multiple poker machines were in use during the mandatory shutdown period. Authorities reported turnover exceeding AU$10,000 at the time of the breach.
Under the Gambling Regulation Act 2003, gaming rooms must comply with specific operating hours, including a compulsory shutdown between 4am and 10am each day. Permitted gaming hours align with liquor trading hours specified in each venue’s liquor licence.
VGCCC Chief Executive Suzy Neilan said the restrictions are designed to safeguard patrons and minimise gambling harm, adding that venues must demonstrate responsibility by adhering strictly to licensed hours.
This marks the second time the Lara Sporting Club has been penalised for trading hour violations. Earlier in 2025, the venue was fined AU$10,000 for breaches on Good Friday. Ms Neilan said the repeat offence warranted a stronger penalty to reflect the seriousness of the conduct and to provide both specific and general deterrence.
With restricted trading days approaching, the regulator has urged all venues to review their licensed hours and ensure full compliance.
Last year, 11 venues were fined a combined AU$180,000 for trading hour breaches linked to Good Friday and ANZAC Day restrictions
