Australian Turf Club has confirmed the appointment of Steve McMahon as Chief Executive Officer, following seven months in the interim position.
ATC Chairman Tim Hale SC said McMahon had provided strong leadership during the transitional period, establishing a clear strategic direction and gaining a comprehensive understanding of the Club’s future priorities. The Board has now formally endorsed his appointment on a permanent basis.
McMahon will work with the Board and staff to advance three core pillars. These include strengthening the Club’s financial foundations, enhancing the experience for Members, Owners and racegoers, and improving collaboration across the broader racing industry.
Hale said there was clear momentum within the organisation and expressed confidence in McMahon’s focus on financial stability and industry alignment. He noted McMahon’s broad experience across government, administration and racing operations, describing him as a leader who understands the industry from multiple perspectives.
In his remarks, McMahon said the past seven months had provided clarity around the Club’s position and the opportunities ahead. He emphasised disciplined financial management, improved operating performance and maintaining appropriate reserves to ensure long-term resilience.
He also highlighted the importance of delivering consistent, high-quality raceday and event experiences to both existing and new audiences. Strengthening relationships with Owners, racing participants, government and commercial partners was identified as critical to sustainable growth.
McMahon brings extensive experience in racing administration, including more than a decade at the Australian Turf Club in senior leadership roles, as well as serving as CEO of the NSW Trainers Association.
McMahon previously served as Chief of Staff to the Minister for Gaming, Racing and Major Events and as CEO of the NSW Trainers Association
