The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission received 203,918 public requests for social media platforms to remove various categories of online content from January 1 through last night, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, as reported by Bernama.

Fahmi said 91% of the content flagged for removal was tied to online gambling and scams. Of that total, 61% involved gambling-related material while 30% concerned scams, adding that the numbers are rising.

He said 81% of gambling-related content was identified on Facebook, while 58% of scam-related content was also detected on the same platform. For pornographic material, 99% of reported cases were found on TikTok, while 90% of bullying or harassment cases were identified on Tumblr.

The remaining requests involved pornography, harassment and unauthorized services. Fahmi noted that all figures were based on public complaints and that the commission takes appropriate action once reports are received.

He was speaking after attending the Safe Internet Campaign programme at the Mini Library of Politeknik Tun Syed Nasir Syed Ismail at the Pagoh Higher Education Hub.

As of March 31, 47 campaign programmes have been implemented at higher education institutions nationwide, involving 23,196 students, as part of efforts to equip youths with greater awareness of digital risks.
