Brazilian authorities are investigating a suspected illegal gambling operation in Londrina, a municipality in Paraná, that appears to extend beyond betting into a broader network of criminal activity, including environmental offenses.
The operation, carried out jointly by Civil and Military Police, targeted a group allegedly involved in the “jogo do bicho,” a traditional but illegal lottery widely associated with organized crime in Brazil.
Five search and seizure warrants were executed across the southern area of the city, with one individual arrested in the act for illegal firearm possession.
According to investigators, one of the key locations searched was a timber yard, where authorities identified wood being stored and traded without proper documentation. Environmental police issued fines after determining that the origin of the materials could not be verified, pointing to potential illegal logging activity.
The suspects are being investigated for illegal gambling operations, weapon possession and possible drug trafficking, although the latter was not confirmed during the initial phase of the operation.
Police seized bags of coins and written records linked to betting activity, which are now being analyzed to identify additional individuals potentially involved in the scheme.
Authorities believe the group operated with multiple revenue streams, combining illegal lottery practices with other illicit activities to sustain and conceal financial flows. The presence of detailed betting records suggests an organized structure, while the integration with other crimes reflects a pattern frequently observed in unregulated gambling networks.
Police say further developments are expected as the analysis of seized materials progresses.
The investigation was launched following reports from local residents, who flagged suspicious behavior including the presence of firearms and alleged illegal activities linked to the suspects
