South Africa’s online gambling framework remains split between licensed betting and restricted interactive casino activity

Hacksaw Gaming has expanded its South African distribution through a new partnership with Sunbet, the online betting arm of Sun International.

The agreement brings Hacksaw Gaming titles to Sunbet’s platform, adding another local operator relationship for the supplier after its previous South African rollout with Supabets in 2024.

Hacksaw Gaming said the launch forms part of its wider international distribution strategy, which has also included regulated-market agreements in Europe, Latin America and the US this year.

Sunbet enters the deal during a period of heavier digital focus for Sun International. The operator’s online arm reported 75.9% income growth to R2.1bn ($127.4m) in 2025, while Sun International has outlined plans to double Sunbet’s share of South Africa’s online gambling market.

Its group CEO, Ulrik Bengtsson, has also pointed to product work and management changes as areas tied to that target.

The partnership also sits within a more complex South African regulatory environment than in many European online casino markets.

Licensed online sports betting is permitted, but the National Gambling Board has continued to state that interactive gambling remains unlawful without explicit national authorisation.

Industry commentary has noted that some casino-style products are offered through provincial licensing interpretations, particularly under fixed-odds betting frameworks.

Hacksaw Gaming Operational CEO, Marcus Cordes, said: “We’re pleased to make another launch in South Africa through this partnership with Sunbet.”

The launch follows a Q1 update in which Hacksaw Gaming reported revenue of €57.6m, up 28% year-on-year, alongside adjusted operating profit of €47.4m and profit for the quarter of €45.5m.

The supplier has also moved through a leadership change, with Ana Vrabic Verdir named Interim CEO after Christoffer Källberg was relieved of his duties.
