On 29 June 2026, Google will update its gambling ads policy for France to align it with the current regulatory landscape for online gambling content.

Operators of the statutory lottery monopoly will be added to the list of entities eligible for certification. Certification is a prerequisite for running certain categories of gambling-related ads.

Interested operators will need to submit a formal application to Google demonstrating that they meet the requirements set out in local regulations and company policies.

Google also reminds advertisers that requests must be submitted separately for each country in which promotional activity is intended to take place. The update further confirms Google’s territorial approach to gambling advertising. Ads may only run in countries where such content is permitted.

Earlier this month, French deputies filed a bill seeking tighter restrictions on sports betting advertising. The proposal was lodged at the Assemblée nationale by Loiret ecologist MP Emmanuel Duplessy and has been co-signed by around 40 deputies from several parliamentary groups.

The bill draws on the principles of France's Loi Évin, which limits alcohol and tobacco advertising and would restrict where and how betting operators can promote their services.

France's National Gaming Authority (ANJ) recently launched a new responsible gambling campaign titled "Risk Zone" for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. A Toluna-Harris survey found that 41% of French people planning to follow the 2026 FIFA World Cup intend to place bets with a licensed bookmaker.

The regulator also published a new practical guide to help licensed operators comply with data protection obligations under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
