An own goal by Real Frontera FC goalkeeper Sergio Avellaneda during a 5-1 defeat to Ureña SC in Venezuela's Liga has prompted speculation on social media that the incident could be linked to sports betting.
The incident occurred around the 30th minute of the match in San Antonio del Táchira, with Real Frontera already trailing 1-0. Avellaneda received a back pass and attempted to play the ball down the right flank, but instead sent it into his own net. Footage of the play circulated widely online shortly after the match.
While many social media users mocked the mistake, others suggested that the incident could have been betting-related. Those claims have not yet been addressed by Real Frontera FC, Liga FUTVE 2 or any Venezuelan football authority.
