Two casinos in Elko, Nevada, could close next month as their owner works through an ownership transition connected to bankruptcy proceedings.
Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices were filed for Maverick Casino Hotel and Gold Country Inn and Casino, both operated by Maverick Gaming and owned by Maverick NV LLC.
The notices list November 30 as the potential closure date. Maverick Casino Hotel has 198 employees covered by the filing, while another 41 workers could be affected at Gold Country, bringing the combined total to 239.
However, the filings indicate that the properties could remain open if they are transferred to a new owner or operator. The planned closures could also be delayed depending on how the transition progresses.
The situation follows similar WARN notices involving Maverick-linked casinos in Washington. Eight properties there were recently identified for potential closure, affecting around 850 employees across gaming, food service, security and management roles.
Maverick co-founder Eric Persson has said he is working to repurchase those Washington casinos through a new company and expects them to remain open, with affected employees rehired as part of the ownership transition.
Persson has also disputed suggestions that his current Maverick Gaming business is itself in bankruptcy. He said he agreed to transfer assets to lenders in July 2025, after which the lenders filed for bankruptcy through a separate company.
As part of that process, Persson said he repurchased the Maverick Gaming name and has since been acquiring assets from the lenders.
It remains unclear whether a similar transaction will prevent the two Elko properties from closing. For now, the WARN notices leave open the possibility that both casinos could continue operating under a new ownership or operating structure.
