Former Betway Africa CEO Laurence Michel has announced that, after a tenure of 24-and-a-half years, he will be moving over to Chairman of the company.
Indeed, Michel has enjoyed a transformative near quarter-century stint in charge of the Betway's African operations. During that time, he helped oversee the organisation's transition into the modern digital industry amongst widespread infrastructural and cultural change across the African continent with regard to gambling and beyond. Further, Michel also steered Betway's African division through the company's public listing in 2022 via the IPO of its parent company- Super Group.
Now, he looks to step into a new challenge as the company's Chairman, a role which he is evidently well equipped and experienced for. A search for his replacement is now officially underway - as Betway has not yet announced who will succeed Michel in the CEO role.
Commenting on this development via LinkedIn, Michel stated: "After an incredible 20 years as CEO, I am honored to announce my transition to Chairman of Betway Africa and my continued involvement as part of the executive team at Super Group. This journey has been the privilege of a lifetime, and I am deeply grateful to our exceptional team, partners and stakeholders who have made this success possible.
"As Chairman, I remain fully committed to driving our long-term growth and innovation. In this new capacity, my focus will include navigating the evolving regulatory landscape during this pivotal period for the South African gambling sector, while advancing key strategic initiatives that position us for sustainable success."
Last year, under Michel's leadership, Betway formally announced a new partnership with Playtech in the South African market, introducing a new range of gaming options to the operator's local platform. More recently, the company saw its latest advertising campaign featuring Lewis Hamilton struck down at the hands of the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) this month, with the agency labelling the ad as 'irresponsible.'
Earlier this year, Betway officially signed footballing legend Thierry Henry as its latest Global Ambassador
