Prosecutors allege deliberate manipulation of yellow-card markets in Série A matches
Authorities say more than BR1.9m ($364,486) was laundered through irregular financial movements

Brazil’s organized crime prosecutors have charged a former Juventude footballer with match manipulation and money laundering linked to sports betting.

This case marks another high-profile case in the country’s expanding integrity enforcement efforts.

The charges were filed by the Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime (GAECO) of the Rio Grande do Sul Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutors allege the player deliberately influenced events during matches in the 2025 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A in exchange for illicit financial gain.

According to the indictment, the athlete solicited or accepted financial advantages to intentionally receive yellow cards in two league matches, one played in March 2025 and another in May 2025.

Investigators identified abnormal betting activity in player card markets ahead of both fixtures, suggesting prior knowledge of the outcomes.

Prosecutor Manoel Figueiredo Antunes stated that betting patterns showed a significant spike in wagers placed on the player receiving bookings, a market commonly monitored by integrity services due to its susceptibility to manipulation.

Authorities allege that the player later received payments from companies linked to sports betting operations.

GAECO claims that more than BR1.9m obtained through the scheme was subsequently concealed through financial transactions incompatible with the player’s declared lawful income.

The indictment includes charges of fraud, match-fixing and laundering assets.

"Furthermore, we request that all evidence be shared with the Federal Police for the investigation of any related interstate crimes," added Antunes.

The investigation was initiated following information provided by the Brazilian Football Confederation and international betting integrity monitoring bodies.

During the operation’s enforcement phase, authorities executed search warrants at the player’s residence and at the stadium, including the locker assigned to the athlete at the time.
