MGM China has launched what it describes as Macau’s first full-process local recycling program for used playing cards, marking a step forward in the city’s push toward greener tourism operations. The initiative was unveiled at MGM Cotai, according to Macao Daily.
The “Innovative Technology Empowerment – MGM Playing Card Local Recycling Program” enables the on-site shredding and regeneration of used casino cards, making MGM the first integrated resort operator in Macau to achieve a complete local recycling loop for this type of gaming waste.
The program is being implemented in partnership with local technology firm Guanglian Century Technology Company and builds on the world’s first “intelligent playing card shredding support system” jointly developed by the two companies in 2023.
Through an automated shredding system, used playing cards are processed into fragments and converted using a proprietary dry fibre regeneration technology. The method operates with zero water consumption and transforms the shredded material into high-quality recycled fibres. These fibres can then be used to produce environmentally friendly packaging materials, including cushioning fillers and recycled boards.
MGM China Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director Kenneth Feng said the initiative aligns with China’s 15th Five-Year Plan goals of leveraging innovative technology to drive green transformation. He added that collaborating with local technology enterprises demonstrates the company’s commitment to advancing research outcomes and supporting Macau’s economic diversification.
By localizing the recycling process, the program also reduces solid waste disposal and lowers the carbon footprint associated with cross-border transportation, reinforcing Macau’s efforts to build a low-carbon city and promote sustainable economic development.
Once fully implemented, the program is expected to recycle approximately 3,000 tonnes of used playing cards annually
