Appointment comes amid strengthened anti-money laundering reforms in Australia

The Star Entertainment Group has promoted David Schollenberger to Chief Risk Officer, following his announcement on LinkedIn on 13 April.

Schollenberger relocated to Sydney in mid-March to take up the role of Deputy Group Chief Legal Officer, Financial Crime and AML Compliance Officer. In that position, he oversaw key legal and compliance functions, with a particular focus on financial crime prevention and anti-money laundering controls, areas that have faced increasing regulatory scrutiny across Australia’s gambling sector.

His elevation to Chief Risk Officer comes as the Australian Government advances reforms to the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing regime. From 31 March, strengthened obligations concerning customer due diligence, transaction monitoring and reporting have been introduced, signalling a more rigorous compliance environment for operators.

Prior to joining The Star, Schollenberger served as Senior Legal Counsel at Bally’s Interactive from August 2024 until March 2026, based in London. His remit focused on international operations, providing experience in managing regulatory risk across multiple jurisdictions.

At The Star, he is expected to play a central role in advising on regulatory exposure, enhancing AML controls and reinforcing the group’s broader risk and compliance framework across its casino operations.

The appointment reflects the shifting regulatory landscape in Australia and may foreshadow similar senior risk and compliance moves by other major operators seeking to strengthen governance standards.
