Australian casino operator, The Star Entertainment Group, has appointed David Schollenberger as its Deputy Group Chief Legal Officer, Financial Crime and AML Compliance Officer.
Schollenberger confirmed the move in a personal announcement, stating he has relocated to Sydney to take up the role.
In his new position, he will oversee key legal and compliance functions, with a particular focus on financial crime prevention and anti-money laundering (AML) – areas that have been under increasing regulatory scrutiny across the Australian gambling sector.
Schollenberger brings significant experience in legal and compliance roles – from August 2024 until March 2026, he held a Senior Legal Counsel role with Bally’s Interactive.
This role focused on international operations and indeed, Schollenberger was located in London during his tenure.
His new responsibilities at The Star Entertainment will include advising on regulatory risk, enhancing AML controls and supporting the group’s broader compliance strategy across its casino operations.
The Australian Government, has been working to revamp the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act in order to improve the AML situation in the country.
From March 31, a number of reforms focused on increasing customer due diligence, transaction monitoring and reporting are going to be put into effect in this regard.
This move for The Star is therefore no surprise, and reflects the changing regulatory landscape. Indeed, we may well see similar appointments from other major Australian operators in coming weeks and months to reinforce their own preparedness for this new environment.
The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) has been releasing training kits and guidelines to help businesses comply with the new AML/CTF act
